Hello, I am

Abdullah Albyati

I never guess. It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.

My Journey

My name is Abdullah Albyati (AKA Ricky) I am a U.S Army Veteran and a Data Analyst. I was born in Baghdad Iraq. I don't remember much about my childhood; just a few events. I remember when I was in 3rd or 4th grade I used to get called to the 6th-grade classroom by the teachers to show the 6th graders how to solve a math problem.

I also remember when my older brother bought a computer. I think we were the only house in the neighborhood with a computer. The day I saw the machine I was awed by the cube screen and the tower looking thing next to it. It felt like I was looking at a spaceship. I will never forget how excited I was to be able to use it. Since that moment computers became my passion. I wanted to learn every little thing about the technology and how it works. I ended up working at a local shop that buys, sells, and repair computers. Here I learned many things about hardware and software.

Fast forward a few years, we migrated to Syria where I lived in Damascus. I worked with a company as an internet cafe admin and quickly advanced to a network admin/project manager where I led a team to design, implement and troubleshoot networks for many clients. Here I was, 16 years old, mentoring and managing adult team members.

Four years later I moved back to Iraq to work as an interpreter for the U.S Army where I met some of the most exceptional leaders in the world. My time as an interpreter taught me how to be resilient and how to work under pressure. The dedication and motivation of the American Soldiers that I worked with was a primary reason for me joining the United States Army a few years later.

Four years after that, my visa application was approved, and on September 1, 2010, I arrived in San Jose California. I spent about a year or so volunteering at Catholic Charities refugee resettlement program as a program assistant where I helped in managing refugee cases by providing translation as needed, and assisting refugees to find a supportive community in the United States.

Less than two years later I enlisted in the Army and was shipped to Basic training on January 1st, 2012. My time in the Army added a long list of skills and attributes to my ever expanding skill set. From leadership to project management the Army provided me with a professional environment to learn and grow as a leader and as a person.

This was a short version of my long journey I hope you enjoyed reading my story and I will leave you with some of my favorite quotes.

“ Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” Barack Obama

"Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand." Chinese Proverb
